From Conversation to Pipeline: Putting an Alpha Factory Behind an API

Your best analysis is trapped behind a login.

Yesterday you asked IntelCast's agent chat for a 20-day forecast with confidence bands and a directional call. It took eighty seconds and the answer was excellent. But your quant process doesn't run in conversations—it runs on schedules. Your pipeline wants that same forecast at 6 a.m. every morning, your risk system wants it in its own database, and your backtester wants a decade of it. A dashboard gives you a screenshot. A CSV export gives you a dead snapshot. What you actually need is for your code to ask for the computation itself.

That is why we opened the IntelCast API. And it is not what you might expect from an API in this space.

1. Data APIs Sell Ingredients. This One Sells the Kitchen.

Most financial APIs are data feeds: prices here, filings there, news everywhere. Valuable—but you still have to build every computation yourself. IntelCast's /api/v1 exposes the engines behind the platform, which means the verbs are different:

  • Compute: 150+ technical indicators on any series—the same engine that renders the platform's charts.
  • Backtest: strategy logic executed on the production backtesting engine, not a spreadsheet approximation of one.
  • Forecast: an ensemble of 58+ models, from statistical baselines to foundation models, returning prediction paths with confidence bands.
  • Research: deep, multi-source investigations dispatched as async jobs—the same governed research pods that produce fully auditable memos.

Add live market data plus read access to your watchlists and portfolios, and the shape becomes clear: it is not a market-data API with analysis bolted on. It is an alpha factory with an API bolted on.

2. Key Hygiene That Would Pass an Audit

Programmatic access usually dies at the security review, so we built the boring parts first:

  • Show-once minting. A key is displayed exactly once at creation—copy it, store it in your secrets manager, done. We store only a cryptographic hash; nobody at IntelCast can recover your key.
  • Prefix-only display. The dashboard shows the first characters (ic_live_a1b2…) so you can identify keys without ever exposing them.
  • Instant revocation. Compromised key? Revoke it and it stops working on the very next request—validity is checked against the hash on every call, not cached.
  • Full attribution. Every key records when it was last used, and every call is attributed to your account.

3. Guardrails That Survive Production

Well-behaved systems need to know where the fences are, so the fences are explicit:

  • Your API quota is your own. Pipeline traffic draws from dedicated per-key rate buckets, separate from your team's interactive usage—your nightly batch job can't starve your analysts' chat.
  • Every response carries its limits. X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, and X-RateLimit-Reset let well-written clients pace themselves; when a limit is hit, 429 responses include Retry-After so backoff is exact, not guessed.
  • Honest status codes. Invalid or revoked key → 401. Over quota → 429. Operations not yet offered on the public API → 403, explicitly.
  • Async for the heavy stuff. Ten-minute research runs don't belong inside an HTTP request. Long operations follow a start → poll → fetch job pattern, the same discipline our own services use internally.

4. A Ten-Line Integration

Create a key in Dashboard → Account → API Keys, then:

curl https://api-ts.intelcast.ai/api/v1/market/overview?geography=USA \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer ic_live_YOUR_KEY"

# Check the fences you just walked past:
# x-ratelimit-limit: 300
# x-ratelimit-remaining: 299
# x-ratelimit-reset: 2026-09-13T04:00:00.000Z

Same pattern for every family: point at the engine, carry the key, read the numbers. When your nightly job calls the forecasting endpoint, it receives the same prediction path—with the same confidence bands—you would see in the dashboard.

5. The Same Engines, the Third Door

In our previous post we drew the ladder: converse when exploring, delegate when a question deserves governed deep research, automate when an analysis graduates into your own stack. The API is that third rung—and the reason it matters is continuity. There is no demo mode behind the chat and a production mode behind the API. There is one set of computations with three front doors: a conversation, a dashboard, and now an endpoint. The forecast your analysts discussed this morning, the pod that researched it, and the call your code makes tonight are all the same machinery.

6. This Is a Platform Commitment

The v1 in the URL is a promise: response shapes are frozen, so what you build won't break next month. Behind it, the roadmap is already reserved in the schema—per-family key scopes for least-privilege access, richer usage metering on top of call-level audit logs, and formal OpenAPI documentation with quickstarts for each endpoint family. Programmatic access is not a side feature; it is how the platform's computations compound beyond our walls.

The Bottom Line

A data API makes you the chef, the sous-chef, and the dishwasher. A computation API lets your code order from the kitchen. With versioned endpoints, auditable keys, explicit rate limits, and async patterns for real workloads, IntelCast's API turns the analysis you trust from the chat and the dashboard into a building block for your own systems.
